The Transfusion Medicine Section at the University of Utah is seeking a Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine physician at the Assistant/Associate/Full Professor level to serve as Medical Director of ARUP Blood Services and Immunohematology Reference Laboratory (IRL). Candidates must be board-certified AP/CP or CP only pathologists with board certification/eligibility in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine.
Expertise in overseeing a blood donor center is required. Duties will include medical direction of ARUP Blood Services, which is an FDA-registered blood center and the dedicated supplier to University of Utah Hospital and Huntsman Cancer Hospital. Specific clinical and research areas of emphasis can be tailored to the successful applicant's academic interests. The relative distribution of research / teaching / administrative duties / patient care responsibilities will correspond to experience and career goals.
In addition to ARUP Blood Services Donor Center, the Transfusion Medicine Section at the University of Utah and ARUP Laboratories includes an FDA-registered hospital-based Transfusion Service (Blood Bank) and an AABB accredited Immunohematology Reference Laboratory (IRL) serving clients throughout the United States. The primary clinical/administrative role of the successful applicant will involve ARUP Blood Services and IRL, with the possibility of a small proportion of clinical coverage for the hospital-based Transfusion Service.

Approximately 17,000 red blood cells and 33,000 total blood component transfusions occur annually at both centers. Clinical services include level 1 trauma, hematopoietic stem cell transplant, solid organ transplant, complex cardiac surgery, high-risk obstetrics, critical care, and more.
